What
A podcast is a series of spoken audio episodes, they are often focused on specific topics or subjects. However, they are commonly interviewing someone, you can find these podcasts on the internet where they are available to download or subscribe to get instant notifications once a new audio episode of the podcast is released. A podcast can also be based on occurring and relevant topics that are going on in the world, for example a podcast that is based on music, they may choose to talk about a new release of a song. However, a very common theme for a podcast is comedy.

When
The first podcast was developed in 2004 by a former MTV video jockey Adam Curry and software developer Dave Winer. The program called iPodder was developed by Curry to enable him to download internet radio broadcasts to his iPod. After several improved and developed his idea and podcasting was officially created. Podcasting was originally called audio blogging and dates back to 1980s but wasn’t officially released until 2004.

Where
The reason podcasts are so popular is because it allows people to listen to a series of episodes while on the move, but to make this possible without a screen, audio episodes. Audio episodes are just like normal TV program episodes as they also usually come in series’ however just digital MP3 instead of MP4. Many people listen to podcasts on their daily commute this is because a screen to watch the episodes isn’t easily accessible. Another place where people listen to podcasts is in the gym, this is where the theme of motivational podcasts are most popular.
People can listen to podcast on platforms such as Apple Podcasts, Spotify, Stitcher and YouTube etc. Since podcasts are becoming increasing becoming more popular the accessibility of the podcast is increasing as well. For example Spotify updating and rebranding their podcasts platform to please customers and support the increasing trend.

Who
The type of people that listen to podcasts are usually active people, this is because podcasts are usually a substitute to watching TV while doing something active instead of just listening to music. The age that is most common to listen to listen to podcasts is 24-35, this is usually because they are doing a daily commute and are also more experienced with tech then older ages so they know where to find podcasts. Also ages younger that most likely aren’t mature enough to listen to people talking about adult topics.
Podcasts are roughly reaching 40 percent of people age 12 to 24 and 25-54. The numbers are increase among men and women but men are more likely listeners with 36 percent of males saying they listen to podcasts monthly, where as 29 of percent of women. 61.2% of podcast listeners spend more time every week listening to podcast then watching TV. The most popular platform where people listen to podcasts is Apple Podcasts with 52% of podcast listeners on that platform, next comes Spotify with 19% and 29% using other platforms.

Why
The reason people listen to podcasts is due to the intimacy of audio, listeners gain and feel they have a relationship with the podcast host/hosts. Is also believed that Podcasts feel closer to us than video. This is because it is more relaxing just listening to voices instead of listening and watching as the brain doesn’t have to work as hard stopping people getting tired of watching, instead they find it relaxing which is another reason for why 61.2% of podcast listeners listen to podcasts for more time every week then watching TV.
People also listen to podcasts is due to how accessible they are, this is because it is very easy for listeners to listen while on their daily commute as they don’t need to watch a screen, instead they just listen hassle free.
